Jufeng New Energy: Pioneering a New Path for Transforming Kinetic Energy in the Coal Chemical Industry

  “Our project purifies coke‑oven gas to produce hydrogen peroxide and then synthesizes propylene oxide. This approach is the first of its kind in China’s coking industry, representing an integrated synergy among coal chemistry, salt chemistry, and petrochemicals. It is a concrete example of high‑end chemical manufacturing and a quintessential model for the transformation and upgrading of the chemical sector,” said Li Minchang, general manager of Jufeng New Energy Co., Ltd. in Juye County, on June 4. He added that the 1 million m³/day integrated utilization project for coke‑oven gas to produce hydrogen peroxide and propylene oxide employs the direct oxidation process for propylene oxide synthesis, replacing the conventional chlorohydrin method. This not only reduces pollutant emissions from production but also makes the process and technology a domestic pioneering innovation.

  According to available information, both hydrogen peroxide and propylene oxide are fundamental chemical raw materials. Hydrogen peroxide is widely used in the paper‑making, textile‑printing and dyeing, food, electronics, and chemical synthesis industries; China has now become the world’s largest producer and consumer of hydrogen peroxide. Propylene oxide is a critically important organic chemical feedstock and the third‑largest propylene‑derived product, primarily employed in the manufacture of polyether polyols, propylene glycol, and various nonionic surfactants. Among these, polyether polyols serve as a key raw material for producing polyurethane foams, thermal insulation materials, elastomers, adhesives, and coatings, while nonionic surfactants are extensively utilized across the petroleum, chemical, agrochemical, textile, and daily‑chemical sectors. “Our project’s products enjoy broad market demand, with significant room for growth in economic, social, and environmental terms,” said Li Minchang.

  Innovation is the primary driving force behind development. Jufeng New Energy has established extensive cooperation with Yangzhou PuliTe Technology Development Co., Ltd., a company with strong technical capabilities, and benefits from the R&D support of research teams from prestigious universities such as Tianjin University, Southeast University, and China University of Mining and Technology. Moreover, General Manager Li Minchang himself is a renowned scholar in the fields of coal chemical engineering and petrochemical engineering.

  On that day, the reporter observed at Jufeng New Energy that key infrastructure—including the hydrogen‑production workshop, the wastewater treatment pond, and the R&D center—had already been completed, with various units and equipment currently being installed. “We plan to finish the hydrogen‑production project by the end of September, and the hydrogen‑peroxide purification facility is expected to be ready for commissioning by the end of October,” Li Minchang said.

  According to reports, once the project is fully completed, it will utilize 1 million cubic meters of coke‑oven gas— a byproduct of coking—per day to produce 750,000 tons of hydrogen peroxide (at 27.5% concentration) and 200,000 tons of propylene oxide. This will significantly enhance the efficiency of utilizing coking byproducts, enabling the enterprise to transition from traditional coal chemical processing to a new‑type coal chemical sector focused on advanced materials, thereby optimizing and upgrading its industrial structure and accelerating the development of a circular economy in the industry.

  “Our project is a chemical engineering initiative focused on the comprehensive recovery and utilization of coke oven gas, which will support the sustainable production and industrial upgrading of coal‑chemical enterprises. Once the project reaches full capacity, it is expected to stimulate the development of the Juye County Industrial Park while boosting the value added of both upstream and downstream businesses,” said Li Minchang. He added that, upon reaching full production, the project is projected to generate annual sales revenue of RMB 4 billion, contribute RMB 1.3 billion in profits and taxes, and create 400 new jobs.
