A notebook originally referred to a small booklet used for recording various matters. Before the invention of writing, humans often employed knotting on ropes to document numbers or events and convey specific meanings, thereby transmitting information. As evidenced by surviving examples from prehistoric art—such as grid patterns in cave paintings, rope‑patterned designs on pottery, and clay fishing weights—knot‑based record‑keeping (including counting) was one of the widely used methods of documentation among early peoples.
